October Presentation - Local Boards and Commissions
Our guest speaker for the October meeting was the Vice Chair for LP Texas and current Chairman of the Hutto EDC, Steven Harris. He made the journey from northeast Austin area to talk with us about ways to get elected to local offices.
While we munched on Mexican food, Steven took the time to share all of the areas in which we could get elected as Libertarians – with a strong emphasis on first taking the time to build a political resumé. Then he lined out how to go about applying for positions on local boards and commissions. He wrapped it up with suggestions for successful campaign tactics.
Basic building blocks for running for local office are:
- Build a circle of support
- Start small and non-partisan (boards and commissions)
- Attend meetings (such as town hall meetings)
- Design yard signs to be reused in the future
Many thanks to Steven and his sweet spouse Katrina for taking the time to offer such valuable knowledge on the election and campaigning process at the local level. As Washington County grows, we expect to grow our LP membership and support those who wish to run in local elections. Thanks to Steven, we now have several tools to accomplish that.
See you next month on Monday, November 11th for our next meeting. Check our facebook page for updates.
As always, we wish to thank Guadalajara for the space to meet and the excellent food and drinks!
